Developments in artificial intelligence are moving at pace, and the NUJ is campaigning to ensure journalism by humans remains at the core of calls to governments and employers.

The UK government has proposed a text and data mining exception in its consultation on Copyright and Artificial Intelligence. We need your support raising concerns about the impact on journalists’ and creators’ copyright if AI developers are granted access to works without payment or consent.

We’re asking the UK government to focus its efforts on greater enforcement of copyright law and highlighting key issues including on rights infringements, fair compensation for journalists when breaches occur, and AI's long-term impact on journalism without strong regulation.

I am a member of the National Union of Journalists (NUJ) and a constituent. I am proud of my work but worry alongside many of my colleagues, that safeguards ensuring the protection of my copyright-protected works will be undermined by the new text and data mining exception proposed in the UK government’s Copyright and Artificial Intelligence consultation.

I recognise that AI will bring some opportunities and welcome exploration of these, but AI developers should not be granted access to works to train their technologies without consent or fair payment for rightsholders.

AI is no substitute for journalism. The editorial integrity and human judgement behind the text and photographs created by myself and colleagues to high ethical standards including on accuracy, play an important role in encouraging trust and public participation in our democratic structures; that must be protected.

Please raise concerns about the impact of the proposed text and data mining exception on journalists and journalism, highlighting the NUJ’s calls including on the need for greater transparency by AI developers on the data sources used to train technologies. The contribution of creators within the creative industries means the sector is worth £125 billion to our economy. It is crucial therefore, that government proposals help safeguard works, through strong regulatory copyright protections, and not efforts by some AI developers to weaken these.
